There is one extraordinary effect which so far seems to have attracted very little attention as Britain left the European Union, February 1, 2020. It is Black Britain’s Challenge to Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s “One Nation” policy as his five-year term in Downing Street begins. Their new voices in the public realm will upend his cash boost to favoured regions. Thus, confronting the Conservative government with new questions of equality and justice.
The boon doggle special pledge
In victory, Johnson pledged a healing balm. A “One Nation” support for the millions of new Tory voters that won his election. He targeted the renegade Labour Party white working class in less developed northern and Midlands regions. No wonder it’s seen as a politically motivated boon doggle for them.
Noticeably, experts suggest the new Tory voters are the same traditionalists who insist on the preservation of their white British, Christian and national culture. Persons with these views tend to be deeply opposed to foreigners, dark strangers and Europeanisation.
Typically, they are openly critical of a distant uncaring Parliament and media elites. Their polling focus groups were firmly against metropolitan London’s multiculturalism. Furthermore, we know these attitudes can grow dangerously stronger in rough economic times. For some a bludgeon against “the others” and a shield from the ravages of debt, lowered status and self-esteem.
The Black response
As a result, there is a rising tide of opposition to the Johnson policy. Black Socialists and labour radicals propose anti-Tory austerity/cuts policies and defence of refugees and migrants. Historians and public intellectuals destroy the claims of superior white nativism. Transparency activists and bloggers denounce racial injustice.
Black lawmakers, think tank strategists, entrepreneurs and academics say the “Tories have no vision”. Community leaders condemn the dangerous Brexit effects on their local social services, jobs and small businesses.
No vision. Just division
Soon the voices will grow louder. The demands to share access to development resources will grow more persistent. If the “One Nation” mantle is the new norm it must be fair and inclusive. Why? Because the regions are also home to hard-hit Black and Asian workers. Denizens of inner city areas of deprivation and racial tension such as Toxteth Liverpool, Handsworth Birmingham, Chapeltown Leeds, and the Moss Side in Manchester. Their needs are painfully acute, even by the government’s own race disparity audit.
To summarise, Prime Minister Johnson has wrapped himself in the “One Nation” mantle to appeal to new Tory voters. His thumping “GET BREXIT DONE” slogan won over the UK region’s poorer, disgruntled normally Labour Party voters.
Without a challenge, conflicting race-class claims for scarce public and private resources will mar the Brexit decades. Therein lies Black Britain’s Brexit Challenge: to reshape the nation’s public policies and party politics. This reality should push us all to think more deeply about overcoming the underlying negative forces of Brexit.
